Slow Feels Good

Slow breaths. Slow movements. Slower thoughts.

I’m feeling the positive effects of my recent 7-day Ayurvedic Fall Kitchari cleanse.

I feel more grounded. My nervous system feels more regulated.

I’m more aware of the sounds and sights around me. I notice the changing color of the leaves, the scent of the air, the feel of the island breeze on my face.

I’m grateful for this reset.

So often during my SomaSoul Somatic Therapy training, I’d hear,

“Slow down to the speed of your awareness.”

Each time I practice slowing down, I benefit. I’m also aware of how challenging it is for me to slow down.

I’m used to moving quickly and thinking quickly and responding quickly.

This past week I got to immerse myself in s-l-o-w…in slowing down to the speed of my awareness.

I had intended to do a 3-day cleanse, but by Day 3, I noticed a sense of calm in my body and mind. I didn’t want to stop!

Slow feels good.

Kitchari

(a nourishing and delicious vegetable stew)

1 cup basmati rice

½ cup yellow mung dal

2 tablespoons of kitchari spice mix

(brown mustard, turmeric, mineral salt, cumin, ginger, fenugreek, Asafoetida)

2 tablespoons of ghee

6 + cups of water

1-2 cups of chopped vegetables

Cilantro, lime and salt to garnish

Soak rice and dal overnight. Drain and rinse. Warm ghee in a large pot, add Kitchari mix and saute briefly. Add rice and dal and mix well. Add water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer 30-45 minutes. Add denser vegetables halfway through and lighter vegetables near the end. Top with fresh cilantro, lime and salt to taste. Makes 2-3 servings.

This is the basic recipe. Enjoy creating your own version!
