You’re not listening to me!
Are these familiar words?
They are for me. I’ve been on both sides of this statement,
the one not being listened to and the one not listening.
Why?
Because learning how to listen hasn’t been an available resource.
Even when I feel like I’m really listening, connection can get lost.
“Mom, I don’t need you to solve this, I just need you to listen.”
Okay, but what does that mean?
Through my work with SomaSoul,
I have a new understanding of what it means to “listen”.
Listening means being fully present
without having to fix, solve or offer advice.
“I hear you.”
“That sounds tough.”
“I get it.”
Sounds simple?
In some ways it is. It does take practice to change old habits. I find it to be well worth the effort because being heard and hearing another with our hearts rather than our minds is one of the greatest gifts we can offer or receive.
“Thanks mom, I appreciate being heard.
Now I can solve this myself.”
